About Evohe & Crew

Evohe is a New Zealand registered 25m steel-hulled passenger vessel accommodating 12 passengers and 7 crew. Built by the De Wachter Shipyard in Antwerp in 1979, she was designed to operate in harsh conditions. All essential systems are duplicated, including two main engines. She carries substantial fuel reserves, produces her own fresh water and is equipped with large freezers, enabling her to be self-sufficient for several months at a time.

Evohe carries a comprehensive list of equipment including 2 aluminium RIB tenders and a two-man flying dinghy. She is a veteran of many successful expeditions including a transit of the Arctic from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean via the Northwest Passage.

Steve Kafka — Owner & Skipper

Steve has owned and operated Evohe since 1984 and they have covered many thousands of ocean miles together. He has the greatest regard for the vessel, which he says, in all the time he has owned her she has never let him down.

Murray Watson — Engineer & Mate

Murray has been a regular on Evohe since 2004 as Crew, Mate, Engineer and sometimes Captain. His very first passage was from New Zealand to Chile, then to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Murray is a design engineer — if something needs fixing, Murray will work out how.

Roger Gibson — Mate & Crew

Roger first came onboard for a trip to the Auckland Islands in 2009 and has been a regular as Mate and Crew since 2017. Originally trained as a plant and landscape ecologist, he made a career change to get back into the remote and wild places of the world. When not on Evohe he can be found working on the DOC boat Southern Winds in Fiordland.
